Interview + GIVEAWAY: A Place at Our Table

If you enjoy Amish fiction as much as I do, you’ll be excited to hear that A Place at Our Table, the first book in Amy Clipston’s new Amish Homestead series, releases next month. A lot of treasured memories are centered around the family dinner table, and here’s some of Amy’s thoughts about her own family table …

Q: What was your favorite comfort food as a child, Amy?

I think it’s always been popcorn!

Q: Who does the cooking when you are on a tight deadline?

Since I work full-time and write several books per year, my mom keeps our house running. My mother usually does the cooking, but occasionally I make something.

Q: What is your family's favorite dinner?

One of our favorites is my mother’s sauerbraten, which I always request on my birthday. We also enjoy having breakfast for dinner, such as eggs, pancakes, or French toast.

Q: Who most often gets the job of washing dishes and how is that decided?

It’s usually my mother and me, but lately I’ve forced the boys to pitch in too!

Q: What's something you have wanted to cook but fear cooking?

I wish I had more time to bake. I’d love to try more Amish recipes, such as whoopie pies or pretzels, but I really don’t have time.

Amy, thanks for giving us a glimpse into your own home and family traditions. We eagerly anticipate your next book, A Place at Our Table.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Kayla Dienner has suffered her fair share of heartache, which is why she vows to protect her heart at all costs . . . until she meets Jamie Riehl.

Along with his volunteer work at the local fire department, running his Amish farm keeps Jamie Riehl busy. He barely has time to eat at the family table, never mind find someone to date. But when he meets Kayla Dienner, he is smitten.

Kayla tries hard to deny her attraction to Jamie. After all, she’s spent the last year discouraging her younger brother, Nathan, from becoming a firefighter. The death of their older brother in a fire a year ago is fresh in her mind—she can’t bear the idea of putting her heart on the line every time the sirens blare.

Then tragedy strikes, and Jamie wants to extinguish any flame between him and Kayla. Can Kayla set aside her own fears to save the love she was determined to deny?

The first book in the Amish Homestead series, A Place at Our Table invites us to a quiet community in Lancaster County where love burns brightly no matter the cost.

Review (+ Tour GIVEAWAY): Halloween Is Murder

Halloween Is Murder
By Carolyn Arnold
McKinley Mysteries #11
Hibbert Stiles Publishing Inc., 2017

Summary

Beware of all that goes bump in the night…

Sean and Sara McKinley are excited about the haunted house they’ve set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser, but things take a ghoulish turn when the reporter covering their story is found dead. With the media keeping mum about how she died, Sara’s curiosity is piqued, and she convinces Sean to take on the investigation through their PI firm.

But this case is not without its challenges. The police are actively investigating it, as well, and it’s not even clear that the woman was murdered. It will take a little cloak-and-dagger, dress-up, and finesse for the McKinleys to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t the kind to give up.

As they troll for leads and work through the skeletons in the reporter’s closet, they unearth a few suspects, but they’ll need to carve out the whole truth if they’re going to find her killer. If they do so fast enough, there might even be time for a little trick-or-treating.

My thoughts

If you enjoy seasonal mysteries like I do, then Halloween Is Murder is a good fit for these cool fall months. Halloween-themed mysteries often get a little dark for my tastes, but I’m glad to say that this story is simply light, humorous and fun – and the novella length felt just right. I have not read any of the previous books and had no trouble keeping up with the characters.

The premise is different from anything that I’ve read … Sean and Sara, married and very much in love, have a background in law enforcement. Financially comfortable due to inherited wealth, they are still eager to work at what they do well – solving murders. Their hearts are also in charitable activities, which is what I loved about them so much. As this story opens, Sean and Sara are sponsoring a haunted house fund-raiser to benefit local children’s foundations. This brought back so many fond memories of Halloween parties that I worked with at our church. Costumes and all the fall activities are so much fun, and Sean and Sara’s enthusiasm was contagious.

There’s not a lot of character depth, but I’m sure that reading the series in order would provide more of that. I liked that the story is clean, with no violence or gory parts. In true cozy mystery format, it’s all about the logical, step-by-step investigation. And in this instance, Sara (and Sean at Sara’s instigation) are investigating a murder way before anyone else rules that it was murder.

Recommended.

Review (+ Tour GIVEAWAY): A Room with a Brew

A Room with a Brew
By Joyce Tremel
A Brewing Trouble Mystery #3
Berkley, 2017

Summary

It’s Oktoberfest in Pittsburgh, and brewpub owner Maxine “Max” O’Hara is prepping for a busy month at the Allegheny Brew House. To create the perfect atmosphere for the boozy celebration, Max hires an oompah band. But when one of the members from the band turns up dead, it’s up to Max to solve the murder before the festivities are ruined.

Adding to the brewing trouble, Candy, Max’s friend, is acting suspicious… Secrets from her past are fermenting under the surface, and Max must uncover the truth to prove her friend’s innocence. To make matters worse, Jake’s snooty ex-fiancée shows up in town for an art gallery opening, and she’ll be nothing but a barrel of trouble for Max.

My thoughts

A Room with a Brew is a fun cozy mystery set in Maxine O’Hara’s Allegheny Brew House in Pittsburgh. Max, only daughter among several brothers in an Irish Catholic family, is an appealing character and I enjoyed the family dynamics. I wasn’t sure what I would think of a series built around a brewpub theme, but this story is well written and I really liked the ensemble cast. Although third in the series, it easily stands alone.

Bakery owner, Candy, features prominently in this story and much about her background is revealed. And what a fascinating background! I especially enjoyed the wide age range of Max’s friends, who formed a fun little investigating group. On top of everything else is the tension that arises when Jake’s former fiancée comes on scene.

The mystery is well plotted with exactly the right number of suspects and a few twists thrown in just when I thought I had things figured out. With its Oktoberfest theme and oompah band, A Room with a Brew is the perfect seasonal mystery to curl up with during the cool fall months.

Recommended.

Review (+ Tour GIVEAWAY): A Tale of Two Kitties

A Tale of Two Kitties
By Sofie Kelly
Magical Cats #9
Berkley Prime Crime, 2017

Summary

In this charming mystery from the bestselling author of Paws and Effect, two magical cats have powers of detection that prove indispensable to librarian Kathleen Paulson…

With a well-placed paw on a keyboard or a pointed stare, Kathleen’s two cats, Hercules and Owen, have helped her to solve cases in the past—so she has learned to trust their instincts. But she will need to rely on them more than ever when a twenty-year-old scandal leads to murder…

The arrival of the Janes brothers has the little town of Mayville Heights buzzing. Everyone of a certain age remembers when Victor had an affair with Leo’s wife, who then died in a car accident.

Now it seems the brothers are trying to reconcile, until Kathleen finds Leo dead. The police set their sights on Leo’s son and Kathleen’s good friend Simon, who doesn’t have much of an alibi. To prove her friend innocent, Kathleen will have to dig deep into the town’s history—and into her sardine cracker supply, because Owen and Hercules don’t work for free…

My thoughts

A Tale of Two Kitties … enchanting, impressive, entertaining, humorous, enjoyable in every way. I am so thankful for the opportunity to review this book because I’ve discovered a new favorite author in the process. Sofie Kelly is an excellent storyteller and has crafted a charming cozy mystery series. Cat lovers like me will absolutely fall in love with Owen and Hercules – and that the protagonist is a librarian is an added bonus for avid readers.

A Tale of Two Kitties moves at a steady pace, involving the reader in the detecting process, as well as the daily life of Kathleen and the people of Mayville Heights, Minnesota. This is not a criticism, but because I haven’t read the previous eight books in this series, it was a little difficult to connect with all the secondary characters. While I greatly enjoyed this story as a standalone, it left me eager to start at the beginning and work my way through. This story is that good!

Unlike some cozy mystery cats, Owen and Hercules are not just there for show, but are an integral part of the story. They’re intuitive, strong willed, and just a wee bit magical. I was a little hesitant about the fantasy element at first, but it’s just plain cute and not over the top at all. Anyone who loves cats will quickly see that the author has captured the essence of cat. I loved the amount of time spent on interaction between Kathleen, Owen and Hercules.

The mystery hits close to home when someone dear to one of Kathleen’s library workers is murdered, and the involvement of 20-year-old letters and photos is a great creative touch. I loved that this story is more character driven than action packed. The only negative is some mild profanity that I wish had been omitted.

A Tale of Two Kitties is all that a cozy mystery should be, and I hope for many more stories in this series.

Review: An Amish Christmas Love

An Amish Christmas Love
By Beth Wiseman, Amy Clipston,
Kelly Irvin, and Ruth Reid
Thomas Nelson, 2017

Summary

Winter Kisses by Beth Wiseman – Three generations of Stoltzfus women are all living under the same roof. At twenty-five, Naomi has never been married, and both her mother, Barbara, and her grandmother, Ruth, have recently been widowed. Each nursing broken or lonely hearts, they also each have potential suitors. When a storm on Christmas Eve forces the three couples to take shelter in the basement of the Stotlzfus homestead, secrets are revealed, hearts are opened, and all three potential grooms drop to their knees for very different reasons a proposal, a prayer, and an epiphany.

The Christmas Cat by Amy Clipston – Emma Bontrager is spending her first Christmas alone after her husband of 45 years, Henry, passed away in July. Although the Amish don t normally allow animals in their homes, a big, fat, orange barn cat keeps coming into Emma s house. She shoos the cat away, but it continues to appear in her house, settling on Henry s favorite wingchair. But the cat isn’t the only Christmas visitor: a group of young people help bring the Christmas spirit to Emma, reminding her that love and hope abide.

Snow Angels by Kelly Irvin – As a young man enjoying his rumspringa, David Byler gave his heart to an Englisch girl, but he eventually realized he couldn’t give up his Plain faith and family for her, so he let her go. He’s found a new love in his Bee County Plain community, Molly Shrock. Molly has been patient, waiting for the man she loves to love her back. Just as he is ready to propose, David makes a startling discovery: Bobbie McGregor, his Englisch love, is back. Will Molly’s prayers for a Christmas love be answered?

Home for Christmas by Ruth Reid – When a misdirected GPS sends Ellie Whetstone to the wrong address, she inadvertently finds herself breaking into the home of Amish man, Ezra Mast. Ellie hopes to fix up the house left by her aenti and sell it quickly, but a series of run-ins with Ezra and his young daughter have her questioning whether a hasty sale is the right move. Could this new place with its slower pace be the right home for Ellie?

My thoughts

Novella collections are the perfect read when I need a break during busy times, which happens more often than I’d like! And since I love Amish fiction, An Amish Christmas Love by four authors that I always enjoy was so very satisfying. Each story is centered around the Christmas season and includes some romance.

Winter Kisses by Beth Wiseman is a little unconventional, and I loved that about it. With three generations of unmarried women living under one roof, and three eligible bachelors staying in their guest house, what could possibly go wrong? The grandmother, Ruth, simply stole the show with her outspokenness and unconventional ways. Just a fun story in every way, but with that touch of seriousness that Wiseman is known for.

The Christmas Cat by Amy Clipston … Now anyone who knows of my love for cats suspects that I would gravitate to this story, and they would be right. I don’t know if cats can really respond to a human’s emotions, but I’ve had a few unexplainable experiences with these precious felines over the years. Little Hank stole my heart, of course, but there’s much more than that involved with this well-crafted story. Clipston has an ability to draw from the ordinariness of life and create a narrative that not only inspires, but connects you emotionally from the first page. What would normally be a depressing theme is offset by sweet memories as Emma reminisces, four thoughtful young adults who are snowbound at Emma’s, and a cat that adopts her … all resulting in a joyful and hope-filled story, reflected in this prayer from Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him …”

Sometimes a novella will continue with secondary characters from the author’s other books – and while I don’t know for sure, I suspect that might be the case with Snow Angels by Kelly Irvin. I enjoyed this sweet story, especially its spiritual themes of forgiveness and transformation, but I felt like there was a lot of backstory that I didn’t know. Still a good read and I’m glad it was included in this collection.

Ruth Reid is an outstanding writer and Home for Christmas is a wonderful conclusion to this collection. However, I need to finish reading this story before sharing my thoughts in order to do it justice. I’ll update this review very soon.

I was provided a free e-copy of this book through the author and NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
