Review + Tour GIVEAWAY: I Love to Tell the Story by Susan Barnett Braun

About the Book

Book: I Love to Tell the Story
Author: Susan Barnett Braun
Genre: Memoir

Is it possible to emerge unscathed from an evangelical upbringing? Yes, as surely as David slew Goliath!

I Love to Tell the Story is Susan Barnett Braun’s account of growing up Baptist in a small midwestern town, touching on many cultural icons common to those who came of age in the 1970s. Braun recounts childhood obstacles, which loom as large as the walls of Jericho in her eyes. She encounters a trio of Sunday school mean girls who make King Herod look tame. She worries about being “ugly as sin” due to her chubbiness, glasses, and braces. She’s so consumed with the idea of Jesus’ imminent return that she wonders whether it’s even worthwhile to brush her teeth at night.

Humorous, poignant, and ultimately triumphant, I Love to Tell the Story will stay with readers long after the last Vacation Bible School craft stick cross has fallen apart.

My Thoughts

If ever a book seemed like looking into a mirror as I read, it would have to be I Love to Tell the Story. Susan Barnett Braun has a gift for writing and expressing the tons of growing-up experiences she shares – and I enjoyed every word. It was literally like taking a walk down memory lane for me.

Braun’s memoir sparkles with humor, poignancy, and spiritual insight. Other than the church and geographical location, our lives were incredibly similar. I grew up in the suburbs of a large southern city and my life revolved around the neighborhood Christian church from the day I was born. We were plagued with some of the same insecurities, but were nurtured by family and life was very good overall.

I loved Braun’s thoughts about her pastor … I figured Dr. Silver was a lot like God would be, if God were a person. You knew him, but then again, you really didn’t. I didn’t really “know” my pastor well either, but he was funny, maybe a little more accessible than Dr. Silver, and I was glued to his sermons as I got older.

So many of Braun’s nostalgic images are wonderful, and I could relate to every single one. Each chapter begins with a beloved hymn, reflecting the chapter’s content, and the words to every verse are in my heart. But it was the youth songs and choruses that touched me most, because again, I had sung each one she mentioned – I’m in the Lord’s Army, Zacchaeus, and Deep and Wide just to name a few. Braun also mentions a children’s musical called It’s Cool in the Furnace – and as a youth leader after college, I actually directed a children’s choir in this performance!

The memoir concludes with Braun’s high school graduation and worrying about understanding God’s will at the time. The words of her teacher are timeless and so relatable: “You just take the next step... If you live your day-to-day life in a way that pleases him, you won’t miss God’s will.”

Recommended.

Guest Post from Susan

One of the reasons I began blogging, ten years ago now, was to document my childhood memories for my kids. Why? When I was a teacher, before I had kids, I used to tell my students stories from my youth. They loved them and begged for more. Same thing when I had my own kids. I wanted to document these tales, but the problem always came in finding the time and the motivation to actually get around to writing them down.

Childhood Memories Friday posts on my blog helped get me moving in the right direction. Eventually, I began thinking I’d like to compile a bunch of the memories into book form. Since many of my most vivid memories revolved around church, I decided that that was the perfect theme. And “I Love to Tell the Story” was born. Each chapter is titled with a hymn that reflects its theme. As I delved into the writing, I had a lot of fun reliving the decidedly memorable life I had led as a youth :). I realized, too, that many aspects of my conservative midwestern upbringing don’t exist anymore in the 21st century. I became nostalgic thinking about the many cultural markers of the 1970s — Lawrence Welk, the Flintstones, — even macrame and latch-hook!

Another goal in writing this book was to put out a positive Christian memoir. So many that I read started out fine, but then dissolved into abuse, disillusionment, or even worse. I began to wonder if anyone had grown up in the church and actually enjoyed the experience … surely I wasn’t alone, was I?

Treat yourself to a stroll down memory lane. It’s my hope that you’ll enjoy yourself.

Review + Tour GIVEAWAY: Reaching Your Addicted Loved One by Victor Torres

About the Book

Title: Reaching your Addicted Loved One
Author: Victor Torres
Genre: Self-help | Substance abuse & addictions | Drugs
Release date: January 8, 2019

As a teenager, Victor Torres was a gang warlord and heroin addict on New York City’s violent streets. Through the ministry of David Wilkerson and Nicky Cruz, Victor had a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ and came to realize that God had a purpose for his life. Victor has spent the last forty-five years helping tens of thousands of young men and women find freedom from drug addiction and gang life. Now, he answers your toughest questions about your addicted loved one. Without pulling punches or promising easy answers, Victor provides wisdom and expertise that can lead you toward success.

Some of the questions Victor addresses are…
  • How can I know if my loved one has a substance abuse problem?
  • How can I tell the difference between helping and enabling?
  • What if my loved one refuses to get help?
  • When should I call the police?
  • What should we look for in a treatment program?
  • What can I expect when my loved one comes out of treatment?
  • How do I prepare for relapse?
God did not create your loved one to be an addict or a loser. On the contrary, God created him or her for a better life. Although, for the moment, it may seem like you are losing your loved one, they still have a God-given destiny and a purpose. No matter how bad the picture may look now, there is always hope.

My Thoughts

I am honored to have been given the opportunity to review Reaching Your Addicted Loved One by Victor Torres. If you have a family member or friend who struggles with addiction, this could be the most helpful book you’ll ever read. I highly recommend it for personal use, to pass on to someone with an addicted loved one in their life, and for pastoral use or church libraries.

One reason I believe this book is so effective is due to the credibility of Torres as he draws from personal experience. Once a gang warlord and heroin addict, he came to Christ through the ministry of Dave Wilkerson and Nicky Cruz, and soon began a vital outreach to addicts himself. But while this book draws from that history, it’s main strength is the practical help and guidance it offers. It’s based on first-hand knowledge, with a strong biblical foundation, and with prayer as a key weapon.

Torres makes an important statement in the Introduction that we need to cling to: I believe that any addict is reachable and curable. What hope that offers, for to doubt it would be to doubt that all things are possible with God. The book’s description in the summary above lists some of the topics that are discussed, and I loved how each chapter ends with some “new life success steps.”

The truth is life changing when
it comes from a place of love.

Here’s a few thoughts that stood out to me…

-- Torres addresses the nature of addiction: “Addiction, like smoking and eating-related illnesses, is a disease. But it is a disease that begins with a choice.”
-- Rather than “tough love,” we need to speak “truth love” by being willing to speak and live out the truth, even when it is hard, scary, and uncomfortable for all involved.
-- Three chapters toward the end speak to treatment programs. One chapter deals with guidelines for choosing a treatment program, another focuses on what to expect when the loved one comes out of treatment, and the other addresses the need to prepare for possible relapse.

Torres points out that “the hopeless state of loving an addicted person is a terrible place to be.” While this book targets drug addiction, I believe the principles he gives can apply to other forms of addiction also.

Highly recommended.

Review: Enough of Me: an 8-Week Bible Study by Priscilla Peters

Enough of Me: Winning the Tug-of-War Between Our Flesh and Our Mission
By Priscilla Peters
Ambassador International, 2018

About the Book

Enough of Me is an 8-week Bible study for women focused on what God's Word has to say about the tug-of-war between our flesh and our mission. The study explores the barriers that stand between where we are today and where God wants to use us to finish His work.

Do you have a nagging in your heart for more purpose? Are you right smack dab in the middle of a tug-of-war between your flesh and your mission?

Often we want to live out the purpose and mission God has for us, but we're too distracted, exhausted, and empty. Maybe it's time to say enough to the excuses, anxiety, and interruptions that get in our way. Could it be we're so busy chasing emptiness and playing the people-pleasing game, that we can't find time to live on mission?

It's time to take a deep breath and do some inventory. Let's dig in and see what God's Word has to say about this tug-of-war between our flesh and our mission. Let's figure out ways to quit chasing emptiness and take bold steps of obedience. Let's discover how we can glorify God and steer people to Jesus in our cubicles, at our dinner tables, in our mom-groups, and with people we encounter every day.

What would happen if we said Enough of Me . . . more Jesus.

My thoughts

Timely, relevant, honest and real are just a few ways I would describe Enough of Me: Winning the Tug-of-War between Our Flesh and Our Mission. Focusing on the theme of “enough of me, more of Jesus,” Priscilla Peters leads through topics such as surrender, peace, mission, purpose, and obedience. At first, I thought that this was a nice study, but not something I necessarily needed – only to quickly realize how much I would actually benefit from it.

Enough of Me is an 8-week Bible study with five lessons per week. Each lesson begins with a personal story or illustration, then weaves together Scripture, questions, and moments for quiet reflection in the application section. I like that the study is thorough, yet conversational, and presented in a manner that is easy to follow and non-threatening. It’s like she sits down with you, puts you at ease, and engages you with her contagious enthusiasm.

The author is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. In fact, she reminds me of my favorite type of speaker, one who has you laughing, then hits home with a pointed statement or question. Enough of Me should appeal to women of any age or level in their Christian journey.

Here’s a couple of thoughts that stood out to me …

It’s easy to create a destination of obedience instead of a continued progression of obedience. If I’m chasing after completing the catalog of obedience, I’ll miss the reward in the evolution of surrender. Bold obedience is a process, not a destination.

Our humanity wants to pursue our own agenda, but we were made for more. The process of dying to our flesh daily is a stroll on the tight rope of life.

My thoughts

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy reading Real-Life Romance by Rhonda Stoppe, but I found it to be a personal blessing that touched me in so many ways. Romance is of God, and that’s what we see in these 25 stories. As Rhonda begins by talking about herself and Steve, I felt like we were chatting over a cup of coffee. Rhonda is a gifted communicator who has a passion for the Lord and helping others, and that’s inspiring.

Each couple’s story is unique and reflects the realities of life – and each couple is totally relatable. Their stories will speak to you, the reader. There’s no “fairy tale” feeling to this collection. While some stories will put a smile on your face, others will draw tears – the one constant being God’s faithfulness. Each chapter ends with a meditative section that begs you to take time and reflect. Real-Life Romance is for everyone, no matter what stage of life you’re in, but it would make a great gift for engaged or young marrieds.

The best way I can give a feel for this book is by highlighting a couple of chapters. Stories dealing with struggles that involve alcohol addiction, death of a child or spouse, and pornography are so very relevant. The stories of Rhonda and Steve’s four children are also great. But in the very first chapter, Rhonda said something that, while I know it in my heart, I still need to put where I can see it every day: “Working to remain content is a vital component to a happy marriage.”

John and Denel weren’t Christians in the early years of their marriage, and Rhonda writes these words that I find so encouraging: “Even though they didn’t know anything about God’s love for them, He loved them anyway. Even when they didn’t walk according to His commands, He wooed them.”

But it’s Curt and Vi’s story that resonated so much and I can’t forget. Coming to the end of his life after a marriage of 42 years and thinking about standing in the presence of the Lord, Curt said to Vi, “I am going to thank Him for giving me you.” If all our husbands could say that of us, how wonderful that would be! Vi, evidently a gifted writer, penned a poem to be shared at Curt’s funeral. I want to end with these ending line from her poem entitled The Waltz:

One Conductor, plus two partners, make a unit of three.
The Conductor selected the tunes and tempo for each melody.
And side by side, we simply complied with
The music He played faithfully.

Real-Life Romance will be a blessing to all who read it. Rhonda Stoppe has become a mentor to me through her writing and I highly recommend this book.

Review: Sacred Rest by Saundra Dalton Smith, MD

Sacred Rest
By Saundra Dalton-Smith, MD
FaithWords, 2018

Summary

Staying busy is easy. Staying well rested- there's a challenge.

How can you keep your energy, happiness, creativity, and relationships fresh and thriving in the midst of never-ending family demands, career pressures, and the stress of everyday life? In Sacred Rest, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine doctor, reveals why rest can no longer remain optional.

Dr. Dalton-Smith shares seven types of rest she has found lacking in the lives of those she encounters in her clinical practice and research-physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory, social, creative-and why a deficiency in any one of these types of rest can have unfavorable effects on your health, happiness, relationships, creativity, and productivity. Sacred Rest combines the science of rest, the spirituality of rest, the gifts of rest, and the resulting fruit of rest. It shows rest as something sacred, valuable, and worthy of our respect.

By combining scientific research with personal stories, spiritual insight, and practical next steps, Sacred Rest gives the weary permission to embrace rest, set boundaries, and seek sanctuary without any guilt, shame, or fear.

My thoughts

Sacred Rest just might be the most beneficial book I’ve read in a long time. If you enjoy non-fiction, this is one you should definitely pick up. And if you don’t read much non-fiction, this is still a book you should invest your time in. Sacred Rest is not theology, and shouldn’t be held to that standard, but rather a book that speaks to the whole person – physical, emotional, and spiritual. While targeted more toward women, it’s a book everyone would find enriching.

Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith is a gifted communicator, engaging writer, loving mom, and committed Christian. As a medical doctor, she is well qualified in sharing her thoughts and experiences, and her writing is grounded in Scripture. Her style is conversational and real – so real, in fact, that I wouldn’t have been surprised to look up from my book and see her across the room from me, for I often felt she was speaking directly to me.

Sleep is not rest. As different parts of an intricate
system, sleep and rest are designed to work
together to ensure every part of you has a way
to regenerate and be restored. (p. 6)

The author delves deeply into the concept of rest, exploring areas and concepts that, while totally new to me, make complete sense. When I think of how often I’ve awaken, still tired after a good night’s sleep, I can see that sleep does not necessarily equate to feeling rested. I love this quote from page 8: “Sleep is solely a physical activity. Rest, however, penetrates into the spiritual. Rest speaks peace into the daily storms your mind, body, and spirit encounter. Rest is what makes sleep sweet.”

In short, easy-to-manage chapters, the author explores the seven different types of rest that our often burned-out bodies require – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, sensory, and creative – followed by the gifts of each. I’ve learned so much already, especially in understanding that the specific area in which we’ve exerted energy needs the corresponding type of rest. I’ve barely scratched the surface of all there is to take in and am eager to go back and read in depth.

What I like best about this book is how the physical and spiritual are linked together, as they should be. My thanks to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith for sharing her thoughts.

Highly recommended.
