A wounded veteran and the police chief's daughter must work together to bring a killer to justice
Caden Wallis lost friends, his girlfriend, and even his leg to the ravages of war. He arrives on the Outer Banks broken and still reeling, struggling to make peace with his new life.
McKenna Dockery has been stuck in limbo since her fiancé died three years ago. Now, when the handsome yet heartbroken Caden arrives at her doorstep, she starts to wonder if there may be hope for her heart after all . . .
But no sooner do they meet than a man is found murdered on McKenna's property--and Caden is the prime suspect. The two must learn to trust each other, or no one will be safe in the tangled web of conspiracy, greed, and deceit lurking in the tidal marshlands of the Outer Banks.
MY THOUGHTS
Rich in characterization and setting, A Vast and Gracious Tide is an
emotionally moving story and I loved it. Lisa Carter’s writing is impressive,
and I wasn’t ready to leave these characters upon reaching the last page.
Romantic suspense isn’t my favorite genre, so I was hesitant to commit at first, but the bottom line is that I love southern fiction and couldn’t resist the appeal of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Honestly, I don’t know when I’ve been more immersed in a setting – beaches, lighthouse, salt marshes, and islands – both fictional and real. The setting is an integral part of the story, literally becoming a major character.
A
Vast and Gracious Tide has that perfect blend of romance, suspense,
and relationship drama, giving readers time to get to really know the
characters. Both Caden and McKenna are realistically flawed and so very
appealing. Both had suffered loss and become emotionally paralyzed as a result.
For McKenna, Caden “was an unforeseen ripple in her otherwise uneventful world.”
I loved McKenna’s drive to rescue things. Her impression of Caden was that “he
held his feelings tight inside himself as if he expected to have to pay for
each one. Perhaps he already had.” McKenna and Caden share a great chemistry.
McKenna’s dad and grandmother, Lovey, are wonderful secondary characters. Lovey is full of southern charm and mannerisms, but with an inner strength and no hesitancy in telling it like it is. What a message in her words to Caden! “Life is precious. God gave you back yours, and I don’t like to see His gifts wasted.” The suspense builds, and it was interesting how historical detail and events of the past entered in.
And finally, A Vast and Gracious Tide is a story that blesses readers spiritually. I knew I was in for a spiritual treat when I turned to the first page and read the words of the beloved Welsh tune, Here Is Love, God’s love song to us. There’s so much to reflect upon and rejoice over in this story – sacrifice, acceptance of loss and embracing the abundance of life that remains, coming home, God’s love and grace – as vast as deep as the ocean.
Highly recommended.
