After reading Love at Any Cost, the first book
in Julie Lessman's "The Heart of San Francisco" series, I
would have to say that Julie has created another hit with this romantic series
based on the McClare family in 1902 San Francisco. I was quickly caught up in
the characters and setting, and hated to see Love at Any Cost come to an
end.
From the glitter and glamour of San Francisco’s Nob
Hill and Napa wine country, to the seedy dance halls and gambling dens of the
Barbary Coast, “The Heart of San Francisco” series is a study in contrasts
between the haves and have-nots, and barriers between rich and poor that only
faith can transcend.
The story of the McClares, a wealthy political family
in 1902 San Francisco, not only highlights the struggles of faith and heart of
three cousins, but of the matriarch of the family as well, Caitlyn McClare. A
widow of strong faith and beauty, Caitlyn butts heads and hearts with her
handsome brother-in-law Logan McClare, the fiancé who betrayed her before she
married his brother. In a breathtaking city where the Irish were predominant in
the early 1900s and wielding power in both politics and wealth, the story of
the McClares is a glimpse into beauty and degradation, poverty and promise
during a riveting time in our nation’s history.
Trailer for Love at Any Cost:
And now, here's just a small glimpse at what you will
experience, from Julie herself . . .
As a card-carrying CDQ (caffeinated drama queen), I thrive on drama and angst in my books, but I wanted this new series to be lighter and more fun, which I hope I have accomplished with the spunky heroine Cassie McClare and the "pretty boy" hero Jamie MacKenna. But …I still needed my fix for drama and angst in this book, so I zeroed in on the secondary love story between the widowed matriarch Caitlyn McClare and her rogue brother-in-law Logan McClare. You see, Cait was engaged to Logan 26 years earlier before he cheated on her, causing her to marry his brother instead. Now that she is widowed, Logan wants her back, and OH MY … the romantic tension that ensues between these two over the course of the three books is something to see and, I hope, enjoy! Here's a clip from a scene between Logan and Cait that hopefully will give you a glimpse into their relationship where sparks often fly.
Clip . . .
“Cait?” She turned at the door. He plunged his hands in his pockets, no longer a man of the world, but a little boy whose heart was on the line. “I love you, and deep down inside, I think you know that, know I would never cheat on you again.” He stared, his eyes naked with the truth for the very first time. “That said, I need to know why? What else are you afraid of?”
She must have sensed his honesty because the hard plain of her face ebbed into a look of such sorrow, it plucked at his heart. Her voice was gentle and low once again, the Caitlyn he was privileged to love. “I love you as family, Logan, but I can never be ‘in love’ with you again.”
The words stabbed. “Why?” he whispered, his voice no more than a croak.
Her bodice quivered with a burdensome sigh. “Because I don’t trust you.”
“Why? I swear to you Cait—I will be faithful.”
“No, Logan, you can’t. A man of your habit and ilk can’t be faithful without God.”
“Let me prove it. I can do this.”
“Maybe. But I can’t. I refuse to fall in love with a man who doesn’t share my faith.”
He took a step forward, his eyes intense. “I believe in God, Cait.”
“No, Logan, you believe in yourself first, God after. There’s a difference.”
His jaw sagged in disbelief. “You’re attracted to me and love me, yet you turn me away because my faith isn’t up to snuff?” Fury boiled in his veins, trumping his passion. He chilled her with a look so cold, he saw her shiver. “Even if it means your precious Vigilance Committee?”
The blood leeched from her face. “You wouldn’t,” she whispered, her words laced with shock. “Y-you agreed, and it’s the decent thing to do.”
He moved in, fists clenched and a nerve twitching in his cheek. “No, Cait, the decent thing to do is to forgive the past and admit you’re in love with me.”
Her legs faltered before steel appeared to fuse in her spine. “That’s your price, then?”
He stared, his jaw as rigid as his pride. She loved him, she wanted him, but she wouldn’t have him because of God? Outrage like he’d never known singed his very soul. “It is.”
She winced as if she’d been struck, pain contorting her face while she listed against the wrought-iron chaise. Firelight flickered across her beautiful features, illuminating myriad feelings that tore at his heart. Shock, fear, fury, resolve . . . and sorrow. The same sorrow he saw in himself, a man of missed opportunities. The flames spit and popped behind him, as if portending a fiery future that would ravage both him and the woman he loved.
He watched as the anger slowly siphoned from her body, softening her features, welling her eyes, and he was reminded once again what a rare woman she was. Prone to gentleness rather than anger, giving rather than taking, others rather than self. Despite the fact he would rob her of something so dear, her eyes bore no retribution or blame, only a sadness that seemed to personify Caitlyn McClare where he was concerned.
“Then it’s too high,” she whispered, the trace of a tear glazing her cheek as she placed his ring on the chaise. She turned away, her voice a broken whisper that prophesied their doom. “Even for my precious Vigilance Committee.”

I love all of Julie's books! I think my favorite of her books is A Passion Most Pure. It taught me the most to wait for my own Collin McGuire in my life. I recently got my heart broke my a real McGuire in real life and this book reminds me to have my heart so deep in God that the man God has for me has to search God to find me just like Collin had to do with Faith.
ReplyDeleteAllysia :)
Thank you for commenting, Allysia! Julie is so good at bringing out the importance of loving God above all and giving Him control when it comes to our soulmate. May you be blessed as you trust in God's perfect timing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this opportunity :)
ReplyDeleteI personally love all of Julie's books but if I had to choose one then I would choose A Passion Most Pure. This book really as a blessing and I loved how Faith was well, strong in her faith and when things got tough she always turned to God. I guess I saw Faith as a role model as I know that when things get tough, I will turn to God. I have been constantly growing in my faith and relationship with God and I know that he will never leave me nor forsake me :)
I shared the link for this on facebook because I think that the more people that hear about this, the more awesome it will be.
So, thanks again for posting this opportunity on your blog and God bless! :)
If I had to choose a favourite book by Julie, it would be extremely difficult as I love all of her books! But, I would have to say that A Passion Most Pure is one of my absolute favourites. I love how Faith is strong in her faith and that she always turns to God. Julie's books are such a blessing and once you start reading you just can't put them down! XD
ReplyDeleteI guess I have seen Faith as like, a role model. Her relationship with God is what I want mine to be like :) And, I am constantly growing in my faith and relationship with God.
I shared the link for this blog on facebook because the more people that hear about it, the better :)
I just want to thank you for posting this opportunity on your blog. You are doing an awesome job and I love how your blog is so interesting to read. So, thanks and God bless! :)

I enjoy your blog and follow you also. Best wishes in the contest!
I love all of Julie's books; I've read all but this latest one (and can hardly wait to be able to read Love at Any Cost). If I have to choose a favorite, I'd say Passion Most Pure since it is the first book about the O'Connor family and Faith and Collin's story.
ReplyDeleteI subscribed to the blog by email and also am a GFC follower. Thanks for giving away one of Julie's books.

Hi Carol,
ReplyDeleteYou are more advanced than I am!
Saturday I am setting up my "official" blog review site. I am very nervous. I am doing all I can to get set up and find some help.
I have not been able to find anyone who is familiar on how to do a Review site. Iam meeting with a couple of friends who are authors of chidren's booksbut do not do official reviewing.
Do you have any suggestions?
ALLYSIA!
ReplyDeleteI am SO very sorry about the breakup, but only because of the pain, not the loss of a man who it seems God did not intend for you.
You know, I broke up with a guy once (it was right after I came to the Lord, something that did NOT set well with my boyfriend). I was so crazy about him that I couldn't even break it off (and it was not a good relationship!!), so I threw the responsibility back on God's shoulders, saying, "If You want him out of my life, God, You're going to have to do it!!" Obviously I was a new Christian and still a wee bit headstrong and rebellious as you can see.
But you know what? That guy dumped me so fast, my head was spinning and I was utterly crushed. It was during that time of pain that God drew me close, seeking Him more than anything in the world. Two years later I met the love of my life, and I can honestly say, even after 35 years, that our love is as close to a romance novel as you can get in this fallen world because he is so tender and kind and loving -- everything this other guy was not, and I just KNEW God had spared me from a failed marriage.
Sorry for rambling, but I just wanted you to know that whatever God has planned, if you seek Him first and follow His precepts, blessing WILL follow. It's as simple as that. :)
Hugs and here's to a win!!
Julie
SHANNON, thank you SO much, my friend, both for sharing the link AND reading my books.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like Faith the best because I modeled her faith after the kind of faith I gleaned from the breakup I mentioned in the comment above, and it (and God) kept me strong and straight and at peace until His plan for a mate could unfold for my life.
I appreciate your support, and wish you a win!!
Hugs,
Julie
WENDY!!! I can believe you STILL haven't won one of my books because I have seen your name in these giveaways before, so hopefully this will be the one, eh??

Carol (SP)
Hey, JANET, well, girl -- we're just going to have to remedy that, now aren't we?? I like to encourage people who have never read me before to check out the "Excerpts" tab of my website at the link below to read samples of my favorite romantic and spiritual scenes for each of my books, because that will give you a good idea of my style of "passion with a purpose" writing. If you only have time for one excerpt, I suggest scrolling down for the romantic scene from A Hope Undaunted because that's my fave!! Here’s the link:

THEN ... TA DA … A Hope Undaunted is currently available for free download right now for e-readers and only $6.00 for paperback, but the giveaway is almost over, so do check it out before it is, okay? Here’s the link for the free download:

GOODNESS, ELIZABETH ... you haven't won a book yet?? I've seen your name on some of my blog giveaways, so we need to take care of this RIGHT NOW!!
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned to Janet and Loraine above, I hope you take the time to check out the "Excerpts" tab of my website at the link below to read samples of my favorite romantic and spiritual scenes for each of my books. The reason you should take a sneak peek is because I am considered "edgy" in the Christian market sinc I have a lot more passion in my books, both romantically and spiritually, so it's best to check out one of my love scenes in case you are not big on that. If you only have time for one excerpt, I always suggest scrolling down for the romantic scene from A Hope Undaunted because that's my fave!! Here’s the link:

ReplyDeleteThis was a good review Carole. Julie is a special person isn;t she? I do have a couple of julie's books, but haven't read them yet. On the Facebook too much trying to get more. She recommends Love Undaunted as one of her favorites I believe, which I found on sale and was able to buy. But, after reading this and watching her video, would be hard to imagine this not being my favorite. :) I have subscribed to your blog and tried to follow the blog, but wanted me to fill out as a blogger. I do have a blog address, but only because of a Google mess -up which makes me use my alternate email address a lot now. Sorry! I did share on my Facebook page tho. MAXIE mac262(at)me(dot)com

I haven't read any of Julie's books yet - but that will change soon as I purchased "A Hope Undaunted" (what a beautiful cover!)at the bookstore today, & located 3 other of her books at my local library - which I will be checking out, one by one, when I finish the one I purchased.
ReplyDeleteI don't have an e-reader - I love reading printed books, & also the chance of having them autographed. I am tempted to buy an e-reader, however, simply because of the opportunities to get free e-books.
I am a blog follower, please enter me in the drawing. Thanks!

BONNIE!!! Thank you SO much for picking up AHU, but a suggestion for you, if you will.
ReplyDeleteIF one of the books you located at your library is A Passion Most Pure, PLEASE read that book first as this is a family saga best read in order due to a number of big surprises in book 1. Now, mind you, AHU can be read first and by itself, but the reading experience of getting to know this family is further enhanced when read in order. But if not, no worries -- they can be read out of order and still enjoyed.
Thank you SO much your interest in my books, my friend, and I hope you like them. Who knows, maybe you will win APMP on THIS blog today, so GOOD LUCK!!
HUGS,
Julie
Will do, Julie! Are there more than 2 books in this series - if so, what order should the rest of them be read in? Thanks!

So far I love Passion Most Pure, but I haven't read them all yet. I followed, subscribed, and shared on facebook and twitter. I loved Love at any Cost!
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I read a lot on my Kindle because I can adjust the font size to where it's easier to read (Goes with age, I'm afraid!). I'm almost neurotic about reading a series in order and I always use the Fantastic Fiction website as a reference. Here's the link to Julie's page . . .

Veronica, thanks for helping to publicize Julie's books! And best wishes to both of you.
Karen and Ganise, thank you for dropping by and supporting Julie. Best wishes in the contest to both of you!
ReplyDeleteHey, BONNIE ... the first series is the Daughters of Boston series, beginning with A Passion Most Pure, then A Passion Redeemed, then A Passion Denied. This series chronicles the first three daughters.
ReplyDeleteThe second series is the "Winds of Change" series and chronicles the next daughter and two sons. Book 1, A Hope Undaunted, is NOW available for free download as we speak. Book 2 in that series is A Heart Revealed, and the final book is A Love Surrendered, both of which are on sale right now as well.
Thanks again,Bonnie, and HAPPY READING!!
Hugs,
Julie
VERONICA ... So good to see you here, my friend, and SO thrilled you read Love at Any Cost!! I hope you consider writing a short 2- or 3-line review for LAAC because even one review posted on Amazon enters you into my newsletter contest to win a signed copy of my next book and having a character named after you in that book too.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like you won A Light in the Window too, or am I dreaming??
Good luck in the contest!!
Hugs,
Julie
