MY THOUGHTS

Kelly’s Search for Family is the second stand-alone story in an impressive series for young readers. I would have loved these stories had they been available when I was growing up, and I even enjoyed them as an adult. They are well written, provide good historical detail – and, because of the subject matter, they create excellent opportunities for discussion. I would recommend them for pleasure reading, book reports, or homeschooling resources.

One reason I’ve been looking forward to Kelly’s Search for Family is because of its atmospheric setting – a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. Kelly’s father is about to convey some long-sought information to fourteen-year-old Kelly about her mother, when he is suddenly taken away by some mysterious men.

The importance of faith and the key part that prayer plays in that faith are clearly conveyed in this story. Timeless themes of forgiveness and a faith that sustains in the midst of hardship are also woven throughout.

Recommended.

Review + Tour GIVEAWAY: With This Pledge by Tamera Alexander

Banner_WithThisPledge_BlogJR

Welcome to the Blog Tour & Giveaway for With This Pledge by Tamera Alexander, the first full novel of the Carnton series, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

9780718081836 Title: With This Pledge
Series: Carnton, Book 1
Author: Tamera Alexander
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: January 8, 2019
Genre: Historical Romance

History takes on vivid life in the stunning first full-length installment of USA TODAY bestselling Tamera Alexander’s new series, The Carnton Novels.

What can a woman—a mere governess—do against the scourge of slavery?

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Clouston’s quietly held principles oppose those of the Southern Cause—but when forty thousand soldiers converge on the fields of Franklin, Tennessee, the war demands an answer. The Carnton home where she is governess is converted into a Confederate field hospital, and Lizzie is called upon to assist the military doctor with surgeries that determine life or death. Faced with the unimaginable, she must summon fortitude, even as she fears for the life of Towny, her fiancé and lifelong friend.

As a young soldier lies dying in Lizzie’s arms, she vows to relay his final words to his mother, but knows little more than the boy’s first name. That same night, decorated Mississippi sharpshooter Captain Roland Ward Jones extracts a different promise from Lizzie: that she intervene should the surgeon decide to amputate his leg.

Lizzie is nothing if not a woman of her word, earning the soldiers’ respect as she tends to the wounded within Carnton’s walls. None is more admiring than Captain Jones, who doesn’t realize she is pledged to another. But as Lizzie’s heart softens toward the Confederate captain, she discovers that his moral ground is at odds with her own. Now torn between love, principles, and promises made, she struggles to be true to her heart while standing for what she knows is right—no matter the cost.

From the pages of history and the personal accounts of those who endured the Battle of Franklin, Tamera Alexander weaves the real-life love letters between Captain Roland Ward Jones and Miss Elizabeth Clouston into a story of unlikely romance first kindled amid the shadows of war.

MY THOUGHTS

With This Pledge is a masterpiece – a literary work of art that, like an intricate painting, engages your senses as you discover more and more through its complexity, and it forever lingers in your thoughts. Through what must have been exhaustive research, Tamera Alexander has fleshed out real-life events and characters into a novel that entertains, resonates with the reader, and challenges your thinking. With This Pledge ranks among the most moving of Alexander’s novels and is the first to go on this year’s “best of the best” list.

Odd how war had a way of leveling life. Of making
what once seemed so important – not quite so significant.
And in turn, it made what truly mattered – people,
taking care of one another, life – of utmost urgency.

Set in Franklin, Tennessee, With This Pledge is a story of hope in the midst of tragedy, multilayered in both characters and plot. Viewing a devastating battle in the distance from the balcony of the plantation where she works as governess, Lizzie is drawn into the harsh aftermath of war as the home becomes a hospital. The atmosphere of tragedy, grief and loss is palpable – as is that of strength, courage and sacrifice. Through Alexander’s exquisite writing, the romance of Roland and Lizzie is a touching bright spot in the midst of turmoil.

In a war where North and South both believed God was on their side, where atrocities were committed on both sides, Alexander’s writing challenges conventional thinking about the morality of slavery and leaves readers with much to reflect upon. And so relevant for us today is the fact that believing in God doesn’t prevent asking the timeless question of Where is God in the midst of all this?

Very highly recommended.

But a tragic new chapter hits the presses when the body of her father’s hard-drinking, #1 bestselling client is found under the historic town bridge. The local police suspect foul play and their prime candidate for murder is the author’s daughter—Allie’s longtime friend.

My thoughts

When the story entertains, it’s fun to discover a new series and new-to-me author – and that’s exactly what I found in A Literal Mess by J. C. Kenney. The story is well written and involves some interesting family dynamics. The small-town setting of Rushing Creek, Indiana had a comfortable, cozy feel to it and I loved the idea of Allie Cobb returning home, even if it was for her father’s funeral.

At the heart of the story is Allie, a very likeable leading lady who is loyal to her family and friends. And she has the essential qualities that make a good amateur detective; she’s intelligent, methodical, has an eye for details, and is a good listener. Readers will love that the “family business” is book related, with Allie carrying on her dad’s legacy as a literary agent.

A Literal Mess begins a new series, and there’s a good blend between establishing the series foundation through setting and characters, and then the mystery plot itself. The murder victim was a successful author, both client and friend to Allie’s dad – and also the father of her best friend, Sloane.

Sloane’s relationship with her father had been
problematic at best and borderline abusive at worst.

The process of solving murders is always more comfortable for me when the victim wasn’t likeable, which was almost the case here, yet it’s bittersweet because he was diligently working at turning his life and relationships around... “How far the man had come in fixing his life, only to have it cut short when the future was looking so bright.” The friendship between Allie and Sloane is a shining spot. Complexity also comes from one particularly strained family relationship, the police chief who just happens to be divorced from Allie’s sister.

A Literal Mess is an entertaining cozy mystery, the only negative being some mild profanity.

PURCHASE: Goodreads | Amazon

MY THOUGHTS

The End Begins by Sara Davison is a gripping, suspenseful, and compelling story, one that is relevant for today’s times. I’m not usually a fan of suspense and rarely read end-times literature, but this story is very moving and thought provoking. There are some unexpected twists and turns, and nothing is easily predictable.

The setting is in Canada, approximately 35 years into the future. The tables are turned and supposedly a radical Christian group has been bombing mosques, resulting in hatred of Christianity, the imposition of martial law, and the placing of severe restrictions on personal freedoms. As one of the first laws is put into place – the confiscation of Bibles because they are deemed to be hate literature – two unlikely friends begin a growing relationship. Devout Christian Meryn O’Reilly owns a bookstore that carries Bibles and other Christian literature, and Jesse Christensen is part of the military that is enforcing those laws.

I enjoyed the developing relationship between Meryn and Jesse, especially Meryn’s testimony and witness. There’s also an uncomfortable realism to this story, with some element of torture and the threat of sexual assault.

For me, the greatest significance about The End Begins is that it both challenges and encourages our faith, forcing me to ask if government opposition to Christianity is actually such a far-fetched idea. Do I take my Bible for granted? Treasure, study and memorize God’s Word like I should? How courageous would I be under threat of real persecution? On the other hand, God’s sovereignty shines in this book, reminding that He is in control no matter the circumstances around us.

Recommended.

Review + Tour GIVEAWAY: Reaching Your Addicted Loved One by Victor Torres

About the Book

Title: Reaching your Addicted Loved One
Author: Victor Torres
Genre: Self-help | Substance abuse & addictions | Drugs
Release date: January 8, 2019

As a teenager, Victor Torres was a gang warlord and heroin addict on New York City’s violent streets. Through the ministry of David Wilkerson and Nicky Cruz, Victor had a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ and came to realize that God had a purpose for his life. Victor has spent the last forty-five years helping tens of thousands of young men and women find freedom from drug addiction and gang life. Now, he answers your toughest questions about your addicted loved one. Without pulling punches or promising easy answers, Victor provides wisdom and expertise that can lead you toward success.

Some of the questions Victor addresses are…
  • How can I know if my loved one has a substance abuse problem?
  • How can I tell the difference between helping and enabling?
  • What if my loved one refuses to get help?
  • When should I call the police?
  • What should we look for in a treatment program?
  • What can I expect when my loved one comes out of treatment?
  • How do I prepare for relapse?
God did not create your loved one to be an addict or a loser. On the contrary, God created him or her for a better life. Although, for the moment, it may seem like you are losing your loved one, they still have a God-given destiny and a purpose. No matter how bad the picture may look now, there is always hope.

My Thoughts

I am honored to have been given the opportunity to review Reaching Your Addicted Loved One by Victor Torres. If you have a family member or friend who struggles with addiction, this could be the most helpful book you’ll ever read. I highly recommend it for personal use, to pass on to someone with an addicted loved one in their life, and for pastoral use or church libraries.

One reason I believe this book is so effective is due to the credibility of Torres as he draws from personal experience. Once a gang warlord and heroin addict, he came to Christ through the ministry of Dave Wilkerson and Nicky Cruz, and soon began a vital outreach to addicts himself. But while this book draws from that history, it’s main strength is the practical help and guidance it offers. It’s based on first-hand knowledge, with a strong biblical foundation, and with prayer as a key weapon.

Torres makes an important statement in the Introduction that we need to cling to: I believe that any addict is reachable and curable. What hope that offers, for to doubt it would be to doubt that all things are possible with God. The book’s description in the summary above lists some of the topics that are discussed, and I loved how each chapter ends with some “new life success steps.”

The truth is life changing when
it comes from a place of love.

Here’s a few thoughts that stood out to me…

-- Torres addresses the nature of addiction: “Addiction, like smoking and eating-related illnesses, is a disease. But it is a disease that begins with a choice.”
-- Rather than “tough love,” we need to speak “truth love” by being willing to speak and live out the truth, even when it is hard, scary, and uncomfortable for all involved.
-- Three chapters toward the end speak to treatment programs. One chapter deals with guidelines for choosing a treatment program, another focuses on what to expect when the loved one comes out of treatment, and the other addresses the need to prepare for possible relapse.

Torres points out that “the hopeless state of loving an addicted person is a terrible place to be.” While this book targets drug addiction, I believe the principles he gives can apply to other forms of addiction also.

Highly recommended.

I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Review: Seasons of an Amish Garden by Amy Clipston

Seasons of an Amish Garden
By Amy Clipston
Zondervan, 2019

Summary

Enjoy a year of beautiful seasons in this new story collection, as young Amish couples manage a community garden and harvest friendships and love along the way.

Spring Is in the Air

As the young people of Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, plant a garden in memory of their friend, Katie Ann begins to worry that her older brother, Ephraim, is dating her best friend. What if she somehow loses them both? But Christian, a new boy in the community, also works in the garden—and falling for him may be exactly the distraction, and lesson, that Katie Ann needs.

Home by Summer

Clara Hertzler is surprised when Jerry Petersheim, her old friend, comes to the garden to drop off his younger sister—especially because Jerry has been gone for years, and now seems to be living as an Englisher. As the friends get to know each other again, Clara pushes Jerry to examine why he abandoned his Amish beliefs. Will Clara help Jerry renew his faith in God, and will they find love beneath the summer sun?

The Fruits of Fall

Tena Speicher has come to live in Bird-in-Hand after her fiancé left her for an English woman. When a homeless veteran comes to the fruit stand one day and asks for food, Tena is not sure how to respond—but Wayne intervenes and offers to let him stay in the barn. Afraid to trust Englishers, Tena must learn, with Wayne’s help, that everyone is a child of God and deserving of kindness.

Winter Blessings

Ephraim and Mandy have dated for some time and now have plans to marry. But after a series of unexpected events and misunderstandings, they wonder if they should go their separate ways. What will happen when their friends at the Amish garden conspire to bring them back together?

My thoughts

Seasons of an Amish Garden is a moving novella collection straight from the heart of the talented Amy Clipston, and I enjoyed each story very much. This collection features the same characters, with each story focusing on a different couple as they spend four seasons working on a community garden for the beloved Emily Bontrager.

“Relationships are like gardens. We need to water
them and weed them to keep them healthy,
and then they’ll continue to grow.
It takes dedication and work, but it’s worth it.”
- Katie Ann

Amy has the ability to capture readers’ emotions through very ordinary situations that are so easily relatable to us all. As in the first story, Spring Is in the Air, who hasn’t been frustrated over circumstances that change relationships, or been hurt by a close friend who gradually pulled away because of a romantic interest? Sometimes it takes the pointed words of someone who cares, and with the courage to speak truth into our lives, as Katie Ann found out.

At the heart of this collection is Emily, who we first met in the novella The Christmas Cat from An Amish Christmas Love, where she facing her first Christmas after the loss of her husband and was befriended by the most intuitive kitty, Hank. Now this new collection of stories tells of friends who come together around a community garden at Emily’s home. These seasonal stories are so very creative, beginning with Katie Ann and Chris, and ending with Ephraim and Mandy, Katie Ann’s brother and best friend respectively.

Seasons of an Amish Garden is an enjoyable and inspiration collection, perfect for all seasons of the year. Recommended to all Amish fiction fans.

I received a copy of this book from the author. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
