Review + GIVEAWAY: The Barn Quilt by Patti Michels

About the Book

Book: The Barn Quilt
Author: Patti Michels
Genre:  Children’s Book
Release Date: November 19, 2019

Farmer Max and Miz Patti have a big red barn on their Maple Shade Farm, but one thing is missing—they need a barn quilt. But what pattern should they hang on the side of their barn? The pineapple quilt, or the corn and beans quilt, or what about a quilt with animals on it? None of them are quite right though. Since it’s Christmas, they wonder what barn quilt would have been just right for the stable where Jesus was born. Work along with their neighbor boy, Dennis, as he helps Farmer Max and Miz Patti decide on and make the perfect barn quilt.

My Thoughts

The Barn Quilt by Patti Michels is a delightful storybook for children and young readers. The story reflects midwestern farm life, friendship, quilt designs, and faith – and is told in a way that will engage children.

The Barn Quilt begins when Dennis, a young boy new to the neighborhood, drops by for a visit with Miz Patti and Farmer Max. He’s noticed that many barns in the area have a quilt block pattern painted on the side and that is perhaps something that their barn needs.

I loved how, as the three friends begin to explore what specific design might best fit their farm, there’s lots of opportunities for interaction by talking about the various quilt block patterns. As they come up with ideas reflective of their farm and lifestyle, readers could imagine what design might fit their own life. It’s also fun to explore a little about the history of barn quilts and learn of some popular patterns, such as flying geese, windmill, library books, and beehive.

Best of all is the opportunity to talk about the true Christmas message as Dennis, Miz Patti and Farmer Max think about what a quilt block pattern for the stable might have looked like. The book is also beautifully illustrated by Nate Myers in a way that draws readers in as the story unfolds.

The Barn Quilt would make a lovely gift for a child at Christmas or any time of year. Recommended.

I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and Redemption Press. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

About the Author

Patti Michels has lived in the same rural midwestern county her entire life, thirty-nine of those with her husband. She loves designing her family’s Christmas card and working with senior citizens. At the end of a long day, she enjoys returning to the farm and looking out her kitchen window at her own barn quilt.

More from Patti

Believe it or not, the idea for this children’s book started out as a Christmas card.  Each year the Michels family produces their own original Christmas card.  This tradition started out simple, in the early 1980’s, as the Michels’ two small daughters helped with the coloring, cutting, and gluing!

Patti Michels and Max, her farmer husband of 39 years, live on a small farm in Southern Illinois.  The girls have grown and moved on, and the empty-nesters have joined others in their small farm community, in creating a barn quilt to hang on their barn.

While Max was preparing the 36″ X 36″ wood panel for Patti to paint, Patti was drawing and designing and dreaming up the best barn quilt pattern to display on the barn at Maple Shade Farm. As Patti painted their special barn quilt, a Christmas card idea popped into her head. ”What if the stable where Jesus was born had a barn quilt?”

Patti feels like ideas are a gift from God, as is her husband, who helps her pull off one after another completed “project”.  Whether it’s feeding cows, baling hay, making Christmas cards, or creating a barn quilt, they continue to work side by side. This book, based on the real life story of creating the barn quilt, gives kids a glimpse into a small farm family life, while also enjoying and celebrating those things that make Christmas so special, like hot chocolate, cookies and God’s love.

Review + GIVEAWAY: Fire, Fog and Water by Mike Martin

Fire, Fog and Water
By Mike Martin
A Sgt. Windflower Mystery #8
Ottawa Press and Publishing, 2019

Summary

Sergeant Winston Windflower and his trusty crew at the Grand Bank detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have more than a few mysteries on their hands. Windflower suspects that the three cases—a homicide, a near-homicide and a fire on Coronation Street—are somehow connected, but how is proving difficult to determine, especially now that he must battle his unusually cranky mood, the never-ending winter that has gripped the coastal region of Newfoundland and his new, power-hungry boss.

In Fire, Fog and Water, award-winning author Mike Martin is true to form, retaining the light crime genre for which he is known while delving into the most perplexing social issues of our time, including mental health, addictions and workplace harassment. Windflower must not only solve the drug-and-death crimes that threaten the otherwise tranquil lives of Grand Bank’s residents, he must resolve his own internal conflicts before they consume him as surely as the blaze that engulfed the house on Coronation Street.

My thoughts

The Sgt. Windflower series by Mike Martin is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The setting and lead character are refreshingly different from anything that I’ve read, which engages my interest and pulls me right into the story. There’s a lot of relational and character depth outside of the mystery storyline, which adds richness to the narrative. This eighth book in the series can stand alone, but I recommend reading the entire series for its character development.

Grand Bank, Newfoundland

The atmospheric Fire, Fog and Water is set in the small community of Grand Banks, Newfoundland. The author’s prose makes the wintertime elements and scenery come alive. Grand Banks is also home to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment, led by Sgt. Winston Windflower. This series doesn’t exactly fit one style, but rather combines elements of traditional mysteries, police procedurals, and cozy mysteries. While the mystery is investigated by the RCMP, the character depth and lack of violence reflect a cozy style.

The Grand Banks setting is one strength of this story, and Sgt. Windflower himself is another. He’s a loving family man, kind and caring, introspective, thoughtful of his coworkers and community, yet he’s portrayed realistically and flawed. I loved the descriptive passages that reflect on his relationship with his wife and daughter. Windflower comes from the Cree community of northern Alberta and is a spiritual man, following the faith of his ancestors. It was fascinating to learn about such practices as smudging and dream weaving. And on the job as crime investigator, he’s intelligent and intuitive.

After commenting on all his good qualities, it’s interesting how, at the beginning of this story, Windflower is cranky and at odds with everyone around him, alienating family, coworkers, even his beloved pets, Lady and Molly. The attitude and actions of Molly, his cat, cracked me up. The mystery involves three seemingly unrelated crimes in which Windflower senses there are dots to connect. The pacing is slow, but steady – building interest, but keeping things easy to follow at the same time.

I’m really enjoying this series and hope for many more Sgt. Windflower mysteries. In the last book I read, A Tangled Web #6, there wasn’t as much character depth as I would have liked, but that’s certainly not the case here. I also appreciate that these stories are clean and contain no profanity.

Highly recommended to all mystery fans.

I received a copy of this book through Great Escapes Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

More from Ross

I’ve been asked to tell something about myself or tell a personal story. I’m not adverse to talking about myself, but I’d rather tell you a very personal story.
There was a show on television, maybe still is I guess, called Overhaulin’. The plot of the show was that each week they would sneak a person’s car away from them, with family help, and overhaul it to make it really cool. It was every car-guy’s dream; to have someone restore a vehicle for you, that was special to you. And to restore it at their expense; Wow, doesn’t get cooler than that.
I never was on that show, but I have a story that I want to tell you. It was late summer in 2014. I had just remarried after having lost my wife of 49 years awhile before. The church that I pastor was having a car show as a community outreach on this particular Sunday. The day had started out rather weird. Several people seemed to be inordinately interested in my movements and where I was going to be as we set up the show.
“Oh, Ross, you need to go into the church, someone is looking for you.” Or, “Hey Ross, would you run get this for us across town?” Yeah, weird things. But I obliged and made myself scarce for the time leading up to the church service before the car show officially started.
So, we do the obligatory service; it ends, and my new wife and I start walking through the grassy field looking at the custom and restored vehicles that had come to the show. I, as is my style, was meandering along the cars talking to people I knew and folks with their fancy cars. Athena, my wife, seemed to be hurrying me along which was not like her at all. And, which was like me, I was just strolling along enjoying the cars.
Then, down the row a few cars, I spot the open hood of a 1961 Chev pickup. That year had a very distinct hood which was used only one year. “Oh, look at that. I had a truck like that years ago. Wow, and look at that, it’s yellow. Isn’t that gorgeous.” Funny, I failed to see the horde of people and cameras set up in front of that vehicle, all looking towards me.
Anyway, I hurriedly moved towards it and recognized it as a limited addition of that year’s Chevy truck. I said, “Hey look at that. It’s the same model that I had. That’s not your normal ’61.” I wondered if someone had restored my old truck.
I must give a bit of back story on my old truck. It had been purchased new in Los Gatos, California by my dad. He had needed someone to drive it home so he pulled my out of school to do that. I was 14. My father was not a stickler for legal technicalities. So I was the first to drive his new truck. It was new, but it was ugly. It was painted an ugly shade of puce. I mean it was really an awful color. My mother called it “Rosebud” because it reminded her of some kind of flower.
In 1975 my dad gave me the truck because he had no further use for it. So I drove it until about 1988 when it was totally worn out. So I sold Rosebud to a friend named Randy who had plans to restore it eventually. I sold it with the understanding that if he should he ever sell it, I’d get first right of refusal.
Fast forward Twenty-five years. A bunch of guys were sitting around a campfire talking and Randy announces that he’s moving to another state and getting rid of everything he owns.
“What about my truck? Are you taking it with you?” “Oh,” he said, “I gave that truck away a while back.” Those who were there said I looked disappointed, or something. I don’t remember feeling that, but it was said.
Now, back to the story. I was looking at this beautiful truck, wondering if it was the same truck, when I saw Randy on the other side of it. “Randy, you son of a gun, you restored my truck.” He said, “It’s your truck.” “Yes, I can see that. You’ve done a beautiful job with her. But why didn’t you tell me?” He said once more with strong emphasis, “It is your truck.” “Are we playing games?” I wondered out loud. And, to make it more cruel, someone had entered the truck in the show under my name. That wasn’t nice.
I was not very situationally aware at that moment. I didn’t see all the cameras and people that were focused on me. People were laughing and cheering. I didn’t notice. I was focused on the pickup that had been my dad’s. It took them four or five time to finally get across to me that this beautiful bright yellow, completely restored truck was a gift from the men of the church to me. Randy had given it to the men’s ministry of The Summit with the request that they make it new for me as a gift for nearly 30 years of ministry to the church. Dozens of men had spent 18 months completely disassembling and rebuilding it from the ground up. It now had a fresh corvette motor, disc brakes, power steering, and a custom paint job. I had been Overhauled. Not by Chip Fouse, but by a group of men, and boys, who cared enough for me to invest months of blood sweat and tears. Not to mention the thousands of dollars it took. I wept. I still weep when I think about it.
One final part of the story that needs telling. I remarried after Cathy died, as her instructions (another story). I guess I didn’t wait long enough for some people, or something. People, about 100 people, abandoned me and left the church. They might not call it abandonment, but I do. I asked some of the more prominent people, “Is there a sin issue here?” “No,” They said, “We just don’t think it’s good for the church for you to remarry.” As you might imagine, it was an extremely painful time for this 67-year-old guy. I had found another person to finish off my life with, which I didn’t think possible, and some people considered it wrong for me to do. They didn’t consider my feelings, and needs, only thinking of  theirs. Or so it seemed.
But all the while this tragedy was taking place, a whole bunch of good and committed friends, were investing their time and efforts, in secret, to rebuild my dad’s old Chevy truck. All the time I was in such pain, these good men were giving up evenings and weekends to do this wonderful thing for me. Isn’t that like God? Sometimes while we are in the dregs of misery, He is working, unseen, to bless us, to encourage us, and to show His love for us.

MY THOUGHTS

A Match for Emma is a special story that speaks to my heart. No matter the location or time period, Pepper Basham spins a great story, but nowhere does she shine more than with Appalachian settings. Southern mores and phrases add to the story’s charm, taking me back to my growing up years in the mountains of north Georgia. Basham paints pictures with her words and creates rich, memorable characters.

A Match for Emma is the story of Emma and Jon – close lifelong friends, reconnected after a three-year separation during which they kept in constant contact. Their story is full of southern charm, snappy dialogue, brilliant humor, and spiritual gems applicable to our daily faith walk. In an effort to escape the expectations placed upon him, Jon moved to New York and became a counselor. The town of Ransom was everything to Emma and she loved playing the role of matchmaker.

The friends-to-something-more theme is a favorite of mine, for what better foundation upon which to build a lasting relationship is a true friendship? The pacing of Emma and Jon’s journey is perfect. And as in real life, conflict came from seemingly different life goals and from trying to direct their own paths rather than humbly seeking God’s guidance. Fans of Jane Austen will love the connection, but the story works well even if you’re one of those rare individuals (like me) who have never read any of her classics.

I hated to see A Match for Emma end and hope for more Mitchell’s Crossroads stories. Highly recommended.

And Adam has only until Christmas to convince Joy that she belongs in Indian Lake—with him.

(Affiliate links included.)

My Thoughts

There’s something special about Home for Christmas by Catherine Lanigan, making it an instant connection for me. Maybe I’m guilty of romanticizing small-town stories and coming home to family, but I never seem to tire of them. Adam and Joy’s story is one of reconnecting and building on a past foundation, as well as working to save a beloved family business belonging to Joy’s grandfather. I’m new to the Indian Lake series and suspect a few secondary characters have had their stories told previously, but that makes the series even more charming – and this story easily stands alone.

Home for Christmas is strong in all the areas that I care most about – the Indian Lake setting, family home and poinsettia greenhouse, growing relationship between Adam and Joy, and the caring townspeople. What could be more perfect for the Christmas season than growing poinsettias? Adam and Joy have a past of broken relationships and personal grief. Adam’s son, a precocious budding genius, steals the show, as well as hearts. And then there’s one of my favorite fictional characters, the fascinating Mrs. Beabots.

Home for Christmas is a touching story of forgiveness and second chances – on a personal level between Adam and Joy, and also as the community comes together in support and help. Home for Christmas would make a moving Hallmark movie and the company is missing a great opportunity if they don’t snatch this one up. But the book is even better than a potential movie because of all the richness and depth that a movie can’t convey.

Recommended.

Review + GIVEAWAY: The Cowboy's Christmas Baby by Cathy McDavid

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

The Cowboy's Christmas Baby
(The Sweetheart Ranch #3)
By Cathy McDavid
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 384 Pages
November 1st 2019 by Harlequin Heartwarming

She gifted him with a daughter

He stunned her with the truth

When Tanner Bridwell discovers he’s a father, he gains some much needed hope. A year ago, Tanner lost his livelihood as a champion bull rider, and—more important—Jewel Saunders, the love of his life. Now this cowboy wants to do right by his family. But first he must reveal a stunning secret that will send Jewel and his beloved daughter either packing…or into his arms forever!

(Affiliate links included.)

My Thoughts

The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby by Cathy McDavid is an enjoyable romance for any time of the year, but especially during the Christmas season. Those who have read the previous two books in this series will enjoy returning to Arizona’s Sweetheart Ranch, but this story easily stands alone.

There’s a lot to like in Tanner and Jewel’s story. The Sweetheart Ranch, a specialty destination wedding site, is an intriguing setting. Jewel, just beginning her new job as photographer at the ranch, and Tanner, an ex-bull rider, are appealing characters. Jewel is trying to decide on a career between barrel racing and photography as she raises Ava, her four-month-old daughter. Tanner still struggles with a personal decision and promise made to his family, a decision with unintended and far-reaching consequences.

I love second-chance romances and enjoyed the tension between Tanner and Jewel. There’s nothing quite like seeing a manly, rugged cowboy finding joy in his baby girl – and little Ava steals hearts. It was great to see how, for the most part, Tanner and Jewel tried to rise above their differences for the sake of their daughter. I’m not a fan of secret baby themes, however, and while I thought Jewel’s expectations were a little too high at times, I wanted Tanner to say “Enough!” and stand up to his family. But best of all was seeing Jewel and Tanner mature as they learned the value of compromise.

The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby is an entertaining romance overall and I look forward to more stories from the pen of Cathy McDavid.
