Author Spotlight + GIVEAWAY: Ann H. Gabhart

From heartwarming small-town stories to historical Shaker fiction, I simply enjoy the writing of Ann H. Gabhart. And one of those small-town stories, Love Comes Home, is a title from my 2014 Favorites list.

In my review of Love Comes Home (click title for review), I described this charming story as "warm, poignant, real, bittersweet, heartwarming, and triumphant" - and it's one of those books where the characters remained with me long after the last page was turned. Ann is generously giving a copy to one of you, details at the end of this post.

Ann is a sweet and gracious lady, and it is an honor to have her visit The Power of Words. If you haven't read any of her novels yet, I hope you will get to experience her writing soon. Now please enjoy what Ann has to share about Love Comes Home, the Rosey Corner series, and her future writing plans.

Ann:  My Rosey Corner series that includes Angel Sister, Small Town Girl, and Love Comes Home, are stories close to my heart. The background of the first book in the series, Angel Sister, was based on the stories my mother and her sisters told about growing up during the Great Depression years. They didn’t have any money, but they always had food and laughter in spite of the hard times. The events in the book are completely fiction, but my mother’s memories are an underlying thread throughout the story. That makes this book a heart story for me.

When the publishers approached me about writing more Rosey Corner stories, I was happy to go back to my characters. I knew they had more stories to share. So I let the sisters grow up and embrace romance before the beginning of World War II. That’s the setting of book two, Small Town Girl. Then Love Comes Home follows the war when the boys are coming home and the Merritt sisters are ready to begin peacetime life. They find out that just because the war is over doesn’t mean they won’t be facing new problems.

Family is at the heart of all three stories. Family and faith and love. The characters are challenged by hard times that test their faith, but lean on the Lord and each other to find a way through. Isn’t that the way life is for all of us? Good and bad times mixed into our years. Walks through the dark valleys. Joy on the mountaintops. And all the paths of ordinary happenings in between. I like to shape my stories around those kinds of experiences. I like to come up with characters who are so real they seem to almost whisper their stories into my storytelling ears. Then once the book is finished and out there for readers, it’s my hope that you, the reader, will let my characters climb into your heart while you live their stories with them. I want you to rejoice with my people and weep with them. I hope you fuss at them when they are messing up and warn them when you see them going down the wrong paths. And when you read the last page, I hope you close the book with the feeling that yes, that could have really happened just like it did in the story.

I am currently doing final edits on my seventh Shaker book, The Innocent, that will be released by Revell Books in July 2015. I am also working on a series of books that will be something new for me. These small town mysteries will be so different that the books will be published under a changed author name, A.H. Gabhart. You can look forward to the first Hidden Springs mystery, Murder at the Courthouse, out in the fall.  I had fun with that book and back here at the farm, I’m brainstorming for a new mystery idea. I do have plans to write more historical stories in the next couple of years too. I think I’d better be doing a lot of that brainstorming.

Carole:  Ann, to be able to write in all these styles is a special gift. I don't know about your other readers, but I've always loved mysteries and am eager to read your small-town mystery series. It has been wonderful to have you visit this week and I hope this is just the first of many times.

    1. Maxie, I discovered Ann's writing when I read The Scent of Lilacs several years ago. I always check out book on CBD's "New & Recommended" page, and it was listed there. The Shaker books are quite unique and I enjoy them as well. As always, it's great to see you here, Maxie!

  4. I love to read right now. I think it is fun to snuggle under the blankets with a good book. We had freezing rain and lost our power this week but were able to go to my sister-in-law's home to stay warm. The weather has been frigid the rest of the week with highs only in the 20s which is unusal in South Carolina.

My daughter lives in SC and she had ice but they didn't lose the electricity. But she said her town shut down and the kids were out sledding on the city streets because nobody was driving anywhere.

    1. Kathleen, I love board games, but haven't heard of most of the ones you mentioned. Mexican Train is a favorite, though. Several years ago, my daughter went on a 10-week mission trip to Indonesia and it was customary to take a gift to the missionaries. When asked what they would like, their immediate answer was Mexican Train pieces. Beth fell in love with the game during that trip and bought us a set when she returned. Now she leads a campus ministry in Germany, but we play Mexican Train every time she's home.

Thanks so much for sharing, Kathleen.

I could play those for hours but never have anyone to play with any more. Ann, you would love these games. I had snow every day for many months the 6 years I lived in Jackson Hole, WY. Sometimes it started in Oct. and only remember one time when it melted be fore late May or early June. O went hunting all time and went once at 40 below. Got really cold that day. We dressed for it of course, but that cold there didn't bother me like it does in Houston,Tx area. Guess because of the Humidity here, and of course I'm older. I freeze really easy now. One thing I loved in WY. was in the spring and all summer it never got hot enough to need an AC in the house or car. That was sure nice.

  33. We did not have terrible weather, like snowstorms or anything, here in Florida, but we did have very cold weather!!! And my favorite thing to do, when it is cold and dreary outside, is to curl up on my recliner, wrapped up in a nice, warm throw blanket, and read one of Ann H. Gabhart 's Amish Books!!! I love to read them, she writes them so beautifully, lots of details make them seem so real!!!

    1. Great choice of books, Frances! I live in Georgia and we haven't had any snow either, although it did come close to me this week. Thanks for visiting.

    2. Hi, Frances. Good of you to drop by and read my interview with Carole. I've been hearing about your chilly 60 degree FL weather. If it was 60 in KY right now, we'd be breaking out the shorts. LOL. But curling up with a good book is a great way to keep warm. I appreciate you reading my books about the Shakers.

  34. I love to read, and with the winter we have had this year it's good that I do. Being retired, I don't have to nor want to go out in the constant snow and freezing temperature. I enjoy day dreaming via whatever book I am reading, the characters are often remind me of people I have known or family members gone. It's a great way to be quiet, but oh so wonderful to far a feisty character pop up to brighten the read or give a a chuckle or two. Your books do that for me. Thank you so much.

    1. You're so right! There's nothing like being pulled into the setting or characters' lives in a really good book . . . And yes, Ann's books do that for me also. Thank you for visiting and please leave your email for the drawing.

  37. Thanks for the book giveaway! I live in MA so we've had plenty of snow days this winter. On snow days, I love to stay inside and read, quilt, knit or crochet while making a big pot of soup for supper with grilled cheese sandwiches. Yum!

    1. That soup and grilled cheese sounds delicious, Diane. My favorite kind of meal for sure. Sounds like you've had plenty of time for your inside fun this winter. But I'm ready for spring. How about you?

  38. We had a TON of snow days last year, but so far just a couple this year (that can always change!). I usually spend most of my time trying to keep my kids entertained and happy (which is a HUGE challenge!) but sometimes I manage to sneak in a little bit of reading, or a movie on Netflix with my hubby.

    1. A "winter storm" came close to where I live last week, but we only got rain. Like you said, though, it's not too late. Back in the early 70s, we had a rough storm as late as April 2. Good to see you here, Kim.

    2. Hi, Kim. Hope you escape the bad storms this year. Don't want any big storms in April, Carole. Spring is what we want in April. LOL. Hope you and your kids have a fun March, Kim, and you get to sneak in some of those movies with your hubby too.

  40. Love Ann Gabhart's books! Favorite way to get through a cold day is to read sitting near the woodstove. Thanks for doing a giveaway. :) kjrochon40(at)msn(dot)com

    1. We've got a wood stove also and I dearly love it, Karen. And it does a good job heating a large portion of our house. Thank you for visiting today.

    2. Ohh, Karen, you're talking my kind of reading relaxation now. We used to have a woodstove and it was great sitting by it, staying toasty warm while I went adventuring with some book. We don't do wood now because my husband got allergic to the woodsmoke.

  41. Since I'm retired & don't have to get out now, I enjoy relaxing with a cup of coffee in the recliner watching the snow fall through the sliding back door, a good book close at hand.. If I feel like it, I will go on the deck & build a little snowman making sure I add a smile to it's face!

    1. Coffee + recliner + good book . . . Now that's a winning combination any time of the year! And be sure to leave your email address for the drawing.

    2. What fun, that you still go make those little snowmen for your entertainment. I once made a snow dog, but I didn't play in the snow this year except for taking walks. That trudging through the snow gave me plenty of exercise. Great way to relax with a book, staying warm inside.
